I came to decoupage by accident.  I was wondering around the craft shop, trying to find something fun to do with my little girl, when we spotted the beautiful decoupage papers.  There was an array of patterns and colours.  The wall was adorned with splashes of these papers and there was a giant giraffe that someone had decoupaged in patches of animal prints.  It was very striking.  My girl and I decided to give it a go.

She chose a cardboard owl and couple of different papers.  We grabbed decoupage glue and brushes and off we went.  I had a couple of plastic bowls left over from a party so we tore up little squares of decoupage paper into each of the bowls.  There was no need to be neat or for the papers to be the same size.  It is good to have varying sizes, the smaller pieces will fit well around curved edges preventing folds and the larger patches will show the pattern better.  Isabella was only 3 at the time, but it didn’t matter that she was so young because it’s such a simple craft.

We took a brush each and glued on patches of paper, brushing a little glue over the top of the paper as we went along.  Once he was dry I added a second coat of glue.  That was seven years ago and he still sits happily on Isabella’s bedroom shelf.  The funny thing was that she didn’t choose girly pink paper, I was surprised with what she went for, but she loves him.
